Description
O presente artigo trata da fotografia oitocen-tista em Portugal, focando-se na figura ímpar de Carlos Relvas. Este artigo é iniciado com breves considerações sobre a história da foto-grafia, realçando as figuras de Joseph Nicépho-re Niépce, Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, William Henry Fox Talbot e George Eastman, os inventores da fotografia, passando pelo enquadramento da introdução da fotografia na cultura portuguesa oitocentista. Carlos Augusto de Mascarenhas Relvas e Campos desempenhou um papel tutelar na fotografia portuguesa a partir da década de 1870, foi no seu tempo, o fotógrafo português mais bem--sucedido, pelas suas ligações a várias figuras da cena científica ligadas à prática fotográfica, pelo ao seu atelier, pela introdução do processo da fototipia em Portugal, mas sobretudo pela sua participação em exposições nacionais e internacionais que trouxeram o reconheci-mento da fotografia portuguesa.
Abstract : This article deals with 19th century photog-raphy in Portugal, focusing on Carlos Rel-vas. The article begins with a brief history of photography, highlighting the inventors of photography, such as Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, William Henry Fox Talbot and George East-man, moving toward the contextualization of photography introduction in the Portuguese culture in the 19th century. Carlos Augusto de Mascarenhas Relvas e Campos played a tutelary role in Portuguese photography from the 1870’s, was the most successful Portuguese photographer in his time, due to his networks of photographic knowledge based on science and technology, to his atelier, to the introduc-tion of the phototype process in Portugal, but above all, for his participation in national and international exhibitions which brought the recognition of Portuguese photography.
