Description
Portugal is one of the oldest countries in the world, with 159 seniors per 100 young people, according to oficial statistics. And ethe scenario will worsen in the coming decades. Technologies play an increasingly important role in the way we live and relate. It is estimated tha around 35% of the elderely population in both Portugal and the re4st of Europe do not have any digital skills. This limitation increases the feeling of loneliness and isolation of this segmento of population, as well as the difficulty in accesing information and services including health services, the loss of autonomy and the increased feeling of incapacity and inadequacy to nsociety. It is precisely to counteract this scenario that this research emerges in order to focus on improving digital skills through learnin g Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to contribute to improving the quality of life of older adults and greater adaptaion society, which is extremely important given the increase in average life expectancy. This research aimed to identify the sociocultural factors that influence the choice of ICT learning in 50+ populations, and to nknow the impactys of this learning on well-being (mental and social) thrioughoutthe aging process. A quantitative/qualitative descriptive exploratory study was carried out, involving a sample of 374 participants who answered a questionnaire, 5 diretors from 5 senior univeristies in the Castelo Branco district and 5 ICT teachers from those same universities who were interviewed throuh semi structured interview. The results show that the factors that explain the choice for learnin ICT relate to the updating of knowledge, the need to the intellectually active and make better use of the computer. Impacts on mental well-being include the stimulation of memory, intellectual skills with greater fluency in thinking and reasoning, social welfare impacts mainly on communication, participation in digital society and the relationship between digital and social inclusion. The results obtained let to the conclusion that effective educational strategies aiming at the promotion of lifelong learning actions and the implementation of social policies that allow an adequate digital and social inclusion are necessary.
