Description
Aberdeen-Angus is a bovine breed that unites characteristics of rusticity, high production and particular meat quality, that allow a high profitability. Zootechnical data were analyzed of a total of 72 animals (with different countries of origin) from an extensive Aberdeen-Angus breed under Portuguese mountain conditions between 2010 and 2016, in order to determine the productivity indexes of the farm and to identify limitations of reproductive and productive efficiency. Estimates of genetic parameters and individual genetic value (EBV) were also performed using the animal model (with BLUP estimates) for the following criteria: interval between parturition (IP); birth weight (PN); weight at 90 (P90), 200 (P200) and 400 days (P400) of age. The reproductive results of the present study suggest that in certain aspects, mainly in reproductive management, although the technology used is the most recommended, the basic fundamentals such as animal's nutrition and body condition were determinant for the results to be worse than expected. Although most of the indicators tell us that reproductive management is not effective, we can conclude that this breed responds well in reproductive terms, with 64.9% of the females in the herd being pregnant with a single insemination and only 5.4% requiring four or more artificial inseminations to become pregnant. The females of the herd with the best EBV in the interval between parturition were the ones of Portuguese origin; as far as the birthweight is concerned, were those of the United Kingdom and the weight at 400 days Ireland stood out. The observed response to the practiced selection, showed marked variability over the years; for IP, PN, P90 and P400, there was no apparent trend of change in mean values, whereas for P200, considering animals born since 2004/05, there appears to be a tendency to increase. The results, in general, are limited due to the small number of data, therefore the need to continue this work is a must.
