Description
Abstract: The urban green areas exert purifying functions in the environment and, as such, their interconnection and utilization becomes indispensable, that is, they represent fundamental elements in the urban network. Its ecological contribution is essential to reduce the harmful effects of the city on the environment, contribute to the aesthetic appreciation and reduction of the impact of the built spaces and play an important role at the social level, providing areas for leisure as well as the practice of activities playful and sporty. The green corridors contribute to a spatial planning strategy inspired by the emerging sustainability paradigm, establishing links between areas of high concentration of ecological, landscape and cultural resources, promoting their protection and compatibility with human activity. This dissertation began with a bibliographical research and compilation of contents related to green areas, importance of green areas, green corridors, geographic information systems and network analysis, in a general approach on the relation between green areas in the study area. The city of Castelo Branco is the focus of this study. The different green areas were identified and characterized, and in the road network identified the sections where green corridors exist. All the basic information was georeferenced and the green areas were scanned and the ArcGIS software was used, as well as the Network Analyst extension that allowed to analyze the network of green corridors in the city. Twelve green areas of the city were constituted of the network, and the pedestrian distances between them were calculated, as well as different areas of coverage that allowed to analyze the density of existing green corridors. Finding a shorter route that allows visiting the green zones identified by route, was the proposal considered to create a green circuit within the city. This proposal will serve to extend the network of green corridors even though at least a minimum of approximately four kilometers, and also offer residents of the city an attractive green route for hiking. The index of green areas for the study area is within the normal limits stipulated, but a more detailed analysis of the resident population and the density of the existing green corridors showed that the use of this type of indices is not enough to characterize the spaces.
