Description
Abstract : The processes underpinning the learning of a musical instrument require redoubled care and great theoretical and practical flexibility by teachers, in order to keep the students motivated throughout the learning process. By verifying the problems associated with this phase of musical learning and exploring different methods and strategies, the current project of action research is based on the problematic of the most appropriate instrument for the clarinet’s initiation. Throughout this research project the procedures applied were presented to a group of three students who were beginning their learning in the clarinet at the Conservatory of Music and Arts of Dão. During the academic year of 2015/2016, this group was exposed to saxonette, an alternative instrument to the initiation of the clarinet around which this action research is centered. The comparative results between the two instruments – saxonette and standard clarinet, as well as the analysis of the interviews and the pilot practice with the three students, allowed to draw extremely positive conclusions, regarding the introduction of the saxonette as an alternative to the initiation of the learning process of the young clarinetist.
