Description
Abstract : The present dissertation is an investigation into strategies to optimize individual piano study. This study combines literature review with interviews with five pianists and experienced teachers. The collected data reveal that, for pianists and teachers, individual practice is of paramount importance in learning efficiency and positively influence musical performance. A set of mechanisms characteristic of the interviewees’ individual practice was identified and analyzed: planning and organization; nonlinear study: mental study; study skills. At a final stage, these and other resources were used to learn the work Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, thus demonstrating how the individual piano study can benefit from the use of efficient strategies and performance planning.
