Description
(Celtis australis L.), a olaia (Cersis siliquastrum L.) e
o bordo-negundo (Acer negundo L.).
E ainda, a necessidade urgente

Abstract: Urban green spaces (UGS) are vital components in the urban environmental quality reflecting on citizen’s life quality. Trees are integrated in various ways in UGS. The main goal of this study was to analyze the UGS of Castelo Branco’s city and to assess species diversity and representativeness of its urban forest. Therefore, the data collected in 2002’s inventory and in urban tree register of 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2013 was synthesized. A total of 1415 trees were inventoried in which the three most representative species were the southern nettle-tree (Celtis australis L.), judas tree (Cersis siliquastrum L.) and box-elder (Acer negundo L.). When analyzing 2007’s urban tree register data the trees with health problems were mainly observed in the oldest areas of the city. Such can be due to the continued practice of pruning that has made trees to become weak and more vulnerable to pathogens attack. Analyzing urban tree register data of 2011, 2012 and 2013 it was found that in city’s newer areas the main problem was related to the tutoring. It has also identified a significant percentage of trees with trunk wounds that require treatment. Additionally, there is the urgent need for metal grids removal/replacement which is causing wounds on the base of the stem. Finally, the creation and maintenance of a geographic database in GIS and the preparation of a measurement and procedures manual are critical for an adequate planning of the actions to be undertaken in the urban forest of this city.
