Description
The objective was to analyze the body composition (BMI and waist circumference) and spirometric values (FEV1, PEF and FVC), comparing the values of sedentary subjects with subjects with a differentiated physical activity, and analyze the lifestyles (consumption of tobacco and alcohol), of Portuguese and Italian students. Sample with 179 individuals (85 Italians; 94 Portuguese) who were higher education students, and they were divided into three groups: GSCH+EXER – 64 students doing supervised exercise, curricular and extra-curricular, at least 4 sessions/week; GSCHOOL – 66 students doing supervised curricular PA, at least 2 sessions/week; GSEDENTARY – 49 sedentary students. We Applied an adaptation of the questionnaire Telama et al. (1997), and measured the spirometry values through the spirometer Microquark/Cosmed, the BMI and Waist Circumference (WC). Data were treated in S.P.S.S. 19.0, using descriptive and inferential statistics. After checking the normality of the sample (Kolmogorov-Smirnov), we used the ANOVA (LSD tes) and the nonparametric Mann-Whitney test. Comparing the two countries, the Italian students have more favorable results in body composition indicators, while Portugal has the best results at the level of spirometric values evaluated. The GSCH-EXER of both countries achieved significantly better results in body composition values and in some spirometric values assessed, compared to GSEDENTARY. The evidence points to students who, more often, practicing supervised physical activities in a continuous and regularly, consolidated an improvement in body composition and lung function, compared to those who systematically turn to sedentary lifestyles, regardless of the country. There is also a tendency for the masculine gender are the elements most often consume alcohol and tobacco, independently of the country.
